Policy:
Background For several years, the Lexia Learning software licenses were purchased to provide intervention support through the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports framework. In previous years, the district has purchased 250 licenses. This software is a reading intervention for students K-8 and selected students in high school.

Summary: Lexia Learning provides two different reading programs for elementary (K-5) and secondary students (6-12).
Core5 Reading, Grades PreK-5 is a technology-based, personalized reading program that provides explicit and systematic learning in six areas of reading instruction and delivers norm-referenced performance data without interrupting the flow of instruction. This research-proven approach accelerates reading skill development, predicts students’ year-end performance, and provides teachers with data-driven action plans to help differentiate instruction. Core5 Reading provides an adaptive and individualized learning experience that enables students of all abilities to advance their reading skills in the areas of phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will be provided both computer based and teacher led instruction aligned with their individual needs.

Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® is designed to help struggling and nearly-proficient readers in grades 6–12 become proficient readers and confident learners. PowerUp helps educators simultaneously address gaps in fundamental literacy skills while helping students build the higher-order skills they need to comprehend, analyze, evaluate, and compare increasingly complex literary and informational texts. Blending online student-driven explicit instruction with offline teacher-delivered lessons and activities, PowerUp empowers secondary teachers—regardless of their background or expertise in reading—to deliver the exact instruction each student needs to become a proficient reader.

Based on the current school year student needs, an additional 1,400 licenses are requested for students in Virtual Academy, in-person elementary general education students, and special education students K-8. The cost per student for a one-year subscription is $22.50. The district is recommending a purchase of approximately 1,400 licenses for $31,500.
Funding: Funding will come from the special education budget. The total cost is based on the quote from Lexia for $31,500.
